Garbage Disposal Maintenance, Replacement and Tips
Does your garbage disposal smell? Here is a simple solution - run hot water in the kitchen sink and turn on the garbage disposal. Add Dawn dish soap (Dawn breaks up grease) while both the water and disposal are running. Remember that a little dish soap goes a long way. Repeat as needed. Always run water when the garbage disposal is running.
Does your garbage disposal hum or not turn on at all when the switch is turned on? If it is humming with the switch off, and it is unplugged, look for and remove any obvious obstruction. If there is no obvious obstruction check on the bottom for a place to use an Allen wrench. If so use the wrench to rotate the motor back and forth until it turns without binding. If nothing happens when the switch is turned on, find and press a red reset button on the bottom of the disposal. If the garbage disposal will still not turn on, ensure it is plugged in. One last step is to check the breaker feeding the disposal. Still having problems? Give us a call at 719-639-4137
Your garbage disposal is not a trash can. A few of the many things that should not go in the garbage disposal are fruit and vegetable peels such as carrot, potato, banana, apple, etc. Never pour bacon grease down the drain, it should be put in the trash. Ensure the garbage disposal is free of solid objects such as nut shells. Silverware is another item that ends up in the disposal. If your garbage disposal gets clogged DO NOT use liquid drain cleaner. Drain cleaner will destroy the rubber seals that keep your disposal from leaking. Use a sink plunger gently, too much force will cause the drain pipes below to separate. Still having problems?
